“Qualified silence might perhaps be more appropriate for the church today than talk, which is very unqualified. That means protest against any form of church which does not honor the question of truth above all things.”  --Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Truth Still Matters

January 3, 2021

My articles the past few months regarding Donald Trump’s candidacy and my decision to vote for Joe Biden upset friends and family alike. Because of that I have refrained from writing a post-election article—until now. The news this evening that Trump pushed Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" votes to overturn the election results after his loss to President-elect Joe Biden was, for me, the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back.” Truth Matters!

The news report was shocking, almost unimaginable to hear. Could it be true? The leader of the world’s greatest democracy used his powerful presidential influence to seek to change the outcome of what has been called by both Republican and Democratic officials the most secure election in our nation’s history? The audio recording leaves no doubt regarding the veracity of the news report. Truth Matters!

In my previous articles, I described Trump as being a narcissistic bully who is devoid of integrity. I use the word “devoid” because integrity is something you either have or you don’t have. There’s no such thing as “some” integrity. I stand by what I wrote and today’s sad news report supports my claim. Truth Matters!

So why do I write this brief article? To “prove” I was right about what I wrote previously? No. Few Trump supporters would be convinced anyway. Admittedly, some of the reason I’m writing is simply to get it off my chest. More importantly, however, I want to emphasize how important truth and integrity (inseparable terms) are for our elected officials. Other qualities are important and necessary, but no person should ever be considered for a position in our country who is devoid of integrity—no matter what other qualifications he or she might have. Truth Matters!

If you plant an orange tree, what fruit do you expect it to grow? You expect oranges. If you take one of its oranges and squeeze it, what do you expect to get out of it? Apple juice? Of course not! You expect orange juice. Why? Because its an orange. Likewise, if we as a nation elect a president who is a narcissistic bully who is devoid of integrity, why would we be surprised with this latest example of dishonest, failed leadership? The Bible is right--we reap what we sow. Truth Matters! It always has and it always will.

All Americans, regardless of their political affiliation, should be deeply saddened today. Let our sadness give us wisdom for how we vote in future elections for candidates of any political office. I cannot say it enough: Truth Matters!
